Meeting Notes from the 08th of September 2015
Venue: International House, UQ St Lucia Campus
Meeting Theme: Club Visit to International House at UQ St. Lucia Campus
Chairperson: Greg Warry

  • In 1954, Rotarian Bert Martin accepted the challenge of initiating a significant project for the 50th Anniversary of Rotary International - to establish an International House style accommodation at the University of Queensland where both local and overseas students could benefit from a shared experience of university life by living and studying together.
  • His dream came true and this year International House, The University of Queensland celebrated their 50th anniversary.
  • Joined by our friends at Nundah at IH for a special dinner. John Boyd, who was in the first intake of students and is now the District IH liaison officer for Rotary, gave us a history of IH.
  • Followed by a fine speech from Past International President and Club Member Glen Kinross, who spoke of Bert Martin’s involvement in IH, and indeed his own experiences, including the work put in by Rotarians in response to the floods of Australia Day, 1974 in having IH ready for student in take just a month later.
  • We also heard from current student, Jaskireth Dhillon. Jas hails from Malaysia and is studying Engineering, and spoke of his experiences living at IH.
  • A cheque was presented to Peta of the IH foundation who was genuinely thrilled at the contribution, noting it will go a long way to renovating a part of IH that was long overdue, and happens to be in the Sir Clem Renouf wing.
  • The event was co-ordinated by and wasn’t possible without Laura Stokes of IH who also gave us a tour along with John, after dinner. Big thanks to all from IH.
  • We look forward to going back again.
