President’s Message for October 2018 Bulletin

Welcome to the October edition of our Bulletin.
October was a very busy month for our club. Not only because there was five Tuesdays (meeting nights) in October but also because we were away from RQ three of the five Tuesdays. Also, we had another bigger event – Swimathon.

The Swimathon – 20 October:
October is the “End Polio Now” Month with “World Polio Day” on 24 October.
We had our annual “Swimathon” on 20 October. The weather was beautiful and the swimmers raised about $5,000 - $6,000 founds this year.
Thanks Gary Lillicrap and Angie McPhee for the great effort to organise Swimathon. Also thanks Hugh and Norm for cooking BBQ.
Swimathon is a great event. This year we tried to put Swimathon on Eventbrite and got 93 viewers. It is a good PR thought we did not get more swimmers this year.
We need your ideas and support to make our Swimathon better next year.

Club Meetings
We started October meeting (2 Oct) with Graham Billinghurst’s “Travel Talk” at RQ. A great journey from a developer to a professional banker. This is Graham’s first speech at our club and we hope to enjoy more.
Our first vocation visit this year was to attend the International House Peace and Understanding Lecture on 9 Oct. UQ Chancellor, Mr Peter Varghese AO talked gave us a birdview of the current world affairs especially the relationship between US and China. It was a great night. I will try to get a copy of his speech for members who missed this event.
Our first joint meeting this year was with Rotary Club of Fortitude Valley (18 Oct) which sponsored our club in 1956. It was a great night to catch up with old and new friends and learn more about Rotary.
Our first social evening this year was held at Breakfast Creek Hotel on 23 Oct. Over 10 members and partners came and enjoyed Rotary fellowship. We also promoted this event on Eventbrite and got 46 viewers and four people registered to come. However, only one found us and two came but couldn’t found us. We will make it a better social event next time and to involve more with local communities.
On 30 October, we held our annual Pride of Workmanship Award at RQ. This year the award went to Christopher Blayden – a very bright young IT staff from Country Consulting. Thanks Marilyn organising this annual event. We hope to get more nominees next year.
In November, we will have two Melbourne Cup day events (5 & 6), two Nundah history events (13 & 20) and our guest speaker Symantha Liu talking about the “Father of Chinatown – Eddie Liu” on 27 Nov.

Membership & AGM:
We are planning a new member induction for Peter McPhee on 13 November.
Our AGM will be on 4 December. We need a President Elect for 2019-2020.

Projects & Activities:
  • Drought Relief Donation: Our club gave $2,000 from our Golf Charity Day fund to support the Longreach area drought relief to RAWCS project number 46-2013-14 (D 9570).
  • 5 November: Stone Corner Melbourne Cup Calcutta.
  • 6 November: Melbourne Cup luncheon – Breakfast Creek Hotel
  • 25 October: BBQ for Aunties & Uncles at the Hemmant scout hall
District & Cluster:
  • 10 November: Albion trivia night - great to have a cluster presence.
  • 18 November: District 9600 AGM at St Columban’s College.
Birthdays & Anniversaries:
Happy Birth Day to Gary Lillicrap and Travis Pullen – October;
Happy Birth Day to Gary Fenner and Norm Wilson – November;
And we have two members joined Rotary in October: Angie McPhee and Colleen Dixon.
Congratulations to all.

Until next month, yours in Rotary Service.
Yours in Rotary Service
Rutian Mi
