We started with a very successful changeover night on 3rd July. Over 30 people attended the meeting. Great thanks to Travis Pullen for his excellent presidency over the past two years. Congratulations to Angie McPhee, Gary Fenner, Hugh Springer, Frank Kovachevich and Mile Moody for their PHF recognitions. We also awarded PHF to Chanya Suwanapichon, for her selfless support to our past club president – Travis Pullen. Special thanks to Terry Fenner and Barbara Leddy, two party designers, who lit up our changeover night.
The joint Art Show meeting on 10 July had more than 40 people including those from High-Rise and Stones Corner Rotary Clubs, Rotaract CBD and special guests. The 2018 Art Show raised about $67, 000 and we gave $33,000 to AEIOU this year. In the past 39 years, we have raised over 2 million through the Art Show and we will make it even better for its 40th anniversary next year.
The District Governor’s visit is always a very important event for Rotary clubs. On DG’s visit night (17 July), Dr Garry Lillicrap gave a detailed update on the outbreak of Vaccine Derived Polio and our DG Wendy Protheroe shared her insight on how Rotarians react quickly to the WHO’s request to organise the local support. Wendy is very happy with the conversation she had with our members. We need more conversations about the topics we are all interested in.
On 24 July, we had our first guest speaker Anne Kovachevich talked about “Trends Shaping Australian Cities” and we also inducted our first new member – Dr Desmond Yen. Thanks to Hugh and Garry’s for their organisation, we had members of Albion, Nundah and Fortitude Valley, partners, and guests attend to reach a participation total of over 40 people. I would like to give a special mention to the members who brought their partners and families along, it is always great to see your families.
On 26 July, I attended our first Cluster meeting. We are going to have more joint cluster events this year. The first cluster joint event is the “Rotary Tree Planting” at ACU Banyo campus in September. More details to come.
On Sunday 29 July, Travis, Colleen, Hugh and I joined members from the Nundah and Brisbane Airport Rotary Clubs at the Einbunpin Festival. It was another wonderful Rotary BBQ. We will report the revenue and decide how to use the funds next month.
Tomorrow (30 July), I will attend the 2019 Rotary Art Spectacular Presidents Meeting and discuss the beneficiary of 2019 Art Show. Our board has agreed to support the Royal Flying Doctors as suggested by the Brisbane High-Rise Rotary Club. I will keep you updated.
The board will have our first board meeting on 31 July before the club forum and give you the director’s report at the forum.
What a great start!
Finally, happy birthday to our members in July: Mike Byne and Averil Ward.
Congratulations on the Rotary anniversaries in July: Frank Kovachevich (19 Years) and Gary O’Connor (9 Years).
Until next month, yours in Rotary Service.
