President’s Message for August 2018 Bulletin

Welcome to the August edition of our Bulletin.
There are many things happened in August and we had our 2nd board meeting on 27 August 2018.

The new Club Secretary:

As requested by Pam Beaverson, the board has approved her resignation as Club Secretary and appointed Desmond Yen as our new Club Secretary. Since Desmond will not commence duties until early October 2018, and that Desmond is granted leave until that time. John Leddy will be the Acting Secretary who will be assisted by other directors for some duties.
Thanks Pam for her great support to the club and her continuous role in representing Rotary Club of Hamilton at the Rotary Art Show Committee.
The board also thanks Desmond for taking up the Club Secretary role.

Another new member proposal:

The board has approved the membership proposal from Peter Douglas McPhee and hope we can conduct another new member induction in September.
Thanks Angie for introduction Peter to our club.

The Leave of Absence:

The board approved the request for leave of absence of IPP Travis Pullen from Club and Board meetings, from 21 October 2018 to 19 January 2019.
We thank Travis for his great contribution to our club in the past two years as President and wish him all the best.
Vice President John Leddy will be away from 13 September to 27 September and I will be away from 15 September to 1 October.
IPP Travis Pullen will be Acting President from 15 September to 1 October.

Meetings

Though we had some poor attendance at Club meetings in August because many members are travelling, all the meetings were very interesting and successful.
  • 7 August: Dr John Arvier from High-Rise Rotary Club talked about the Maxillo-Facial surgery. John L will communicate with Dr John Arvier and advise what help our club can offer.
  • 14 August: Ron Baker from Stones Corner Rotary Club talked about the “Brisbane River”. Members enjoyed the rich history story and interesting quizzes about Brisbane River. No PowerPoint, but very “powerful”. Some members even requested the “Part II Speech” of “Brisbane River”.
  • 21 August: Due to our member Colleen Dixon is sick and cannot talk about Aboriginal culture as scheduled, we asked Mike Byrne to talk about the Youth Projects and Gary Lillicrap to update on Polio. They did a great job on a short notice. Thank you very much. John Leddy also updated on the Low Cost Shelter project and outlined latest information on the Orphanage project in Bangladesh. A great club meeting.
  • 28 August: We had 23 people attended our high profile speaker Professor Drew Nesdale talking about the "Ethics of Medical Research from Nazi Germany to Today". It is a very informative and interesting speech. Professor Nesdale explained the complex Ethics of Medical Research in a very clear way for people to understand.
Projects & Activities:
  • Working Bee Day: On 18 August, we moved our club “assets” from MoW garage to Gary F’s shed. Thanks Hugh, Travis, John L, Marcel, Frank and Desmond come and help.
  • The Senior Citizens Investment Fund: The funds are subject to being held in a trust. The Trust Act defines the powers of a trust. The board is working on how to invest and use the fund for local senior citizens.
  • 10 September: Golf Day
  • 15 September: Tree Plant and Cluster Picnic Day
  • 14 October: BBQ for meningococcal in Oriel Park
  • 20 October: Swimathon
District & Cluster:
  • Some clubs in the cluster are donating via Longreach Rotary club towards the drought. Our club will contribute some funds from Golf Day towards the drought.
  • Albion trivia night 10 November - great to have a cluster presence.
  • Nundah Club is supporting a PNG Project of Dr Russ Stephenson (Rotary Club of Nambour). Our club will consider supporting this project as well. More details will be sent out separately.
  • Received request from Sturt Mason about "End Hygiene Poverty" project in PNG. Travis will give more details.
Birthdays & Anniversaries:
  • None in August.
Until next month, yours in Rotary Service.
Yours in Rotary Service
Rutian Mi
